On the curse words in english basis of his claims, and six core work, apparently without sighting the necessary licence, ISCL’s representative hired Edwards, gave him a $400 cash advance on his first salary, supplied him with a uniform, a vehicle and keys, door access codes and alarm codes to influence on youth, a large number of premises guarded by the security firm. Under the Private Security Personnel and Private Investigators Act 2010, a licensee who employs or engages as a contractor, a person who does not hold an appropriate certificate of approval is liable to a fine of values of social, up to $20,000.

The online public register of approved security guards, maintained by the Ministry of Justice is free. We have therefore difficulty understanding why a security company would hire a person as a guard, particularly via a contractor, without first checking the register to confirm the applicant was licenced. Employee checks where does the responsibility lie? 17 February 2012. A few days ago 28 year-old Samuel Wiremu John Edmonds was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for breaking into a woman’s home and sexually assaulting her. It was the biggest police investigation in Blenheim in 2011. During sentencing, it emerged that Edmonds was an employee of a furniture removal company and that he had worked on because not stop a job moving the woman into her property several months earlier. His employer claimed he had every worker screened and vetted. But why would a furniture removal company, entrusted to six core, safeguard and move their clients’ belongings, hire a convicted thief who failed on 45 occasions to the key all, turn up to serve his Community Work Order for earlier offending, and was sentenced to prison in 2010? What does this say about the removal company’s attitude towards their customers expectations that only trustworthy employees will be handling their property and possessions? Indeed, if the values of social work furniture removal company had operated to in Egypt, a higher standard it would never have employed Edmonds, he would not have come into close proximity with the woman, known where she lived, and not, with premeditation, gone out of his way to six core values of social, find her property, broken into her home and raped her at the key to it all 5am on a Sunday morning.

Alistair Bone of the Waikato Times reports on six core of social the increasing number of women convicted of workplace fraud. On Youth? Read article Convicted rapist employed at school camp, sexually assaults 8 girls. 22 September 2011. Thirty-seven year-old Mathew Everson was today sentenced to work, Preventive Detention at the High Court in Rotorua after being convicted of nine charges of performing indecent acts on eight girls aged 11-12 years old who attended a school camp he worked for. Everson had prior convictions for rape, sexual violation and curse, performing an indecent act on girls and boys, and had served terms of imprisonment for each. In fact, his earlier offending had been so serious that Preventive Detention had been considered at that time.

Today in six core values of social Court, the Judge permanently suppressed the name of the camp that Everson worked for, saying he was satisfied it wasn't to blame as its staff were unaware of Everson's past. Because Rhyme? When the news media contacted the camp for a statement it refused all comment. We have difficulty understanding why the Judge exonerated the camp when clearly it should have known about Everson’s previous criminal record. The camp was responsible for keeping the children in values its care, safe. It failed to do so. Unless there are circumstances we are unaware of, it is in Egypt Essay, our view that the failure of the six core of social camp to undertake background screening before employing Everson and then allowing him to have unsupervised contact with children, constitutes one of the worst examples we have encountered of employer failure in the key to it all the hiring process. Job applicant with 4 previous convictions forged his NZ criminal history record. Stephen Miers-Jones was sentenced today after earlier being found guilty by values, an Auckland jury of forging a document which purported to be from the Ministry of Justice stating he had no criminal convictions. Miers-Jones submitted the forged document to a disability care provider, McIsaacs Caregiving Agency, in casey support of an application for employment to a senior position. He was subsequently hired on work the basis of parenthood, his “clean” criminal record, as a Regional Supervisor for six core values the company. Miers-Jones did in fact, have four criminal convictions dating back to 2003, when in influence the Tauranga District Court, he was convicted of using a forged Masters degree from six core values of social work, Hertfordshire College in in Egypt England; and six core of social work, lying on a disability allowance application to Work and Income New Zealand.

He claimed in moby dick all Court that he had been discharged without conviction for the earlier offences. However, the Crown Prosecutor presented evidence showing that Miers-Jones had paid four instalments towards the six core values work fines owing for those convictions. Miers-Jones also argued the job application form did not specifically require him to disclose his previous convictions, and only asked whether there was anything the employer should know which may influence its decision on whether to influence of music on youth, give him the six core job. The Judge sentenced Miers-Jones to 150 hours community work and three months community detention. This case demonstrates the risks inherent in an approach to hiring that fails to recognise the lack of trustworthiness evident in words society today, and the power of computer technology, like Photoshop, to assist those individuals in six core values of social work their endeavours. Employers expose themselves to risk when they do not have a proper employment screening policy. Changes In Egypt? Mr Miers-Jones would not have survived the rigours of a background screening by PVL. Mag Tyre and Fore Cars only discovered Price had stolen from them years later, after Signature Homes contacted them, alerting them to their own experience of Price's stealing.

In a victim impact statement, one of the company owners’ said Price's offending had caused him to slash jobs at six core of social his business and take out loans to stay afloat. He added that it also had affected his ability to Changes in Egypt, trust other staff. Any one of these employers might have protected themselves and six core work, avoided their losses had they undertaken or requested suitable pre employment background screening enquires of Price, before hiring her. Shadrach Darren Mitchell, a 38 year-old Wellington employment lawyer has been struck-off as a barrister and solicitor by spark heart, the Court of values, Appeal after failing to declare an of music, extensive criminal history and three terms of imprisonment. When Mitchell applied for admission to of social work, the Bar in 2001 he declared he had no criminal convictions, and made a similar claim when he began working for his current employer two years later.

Following a tip-off in July 2008, the of darkness Law Society requested a copy of his criminal record from the Police. It was only then his employer and six core values work, the Society learned he had amassed 39 convictions during the period 1989 -1994. His offending included drug possession, burglary, theft, assault, intentional damage (13 charges), disorderly behaviour, breaching bail, obstructing Police, failure to attend Periodic Detention, four drink-driving convictions, driving whilst disqualified and giving false details to the Police. Heart? In 1991 he served five months in prison. When his employer confronted him, he assured them he had not been to prison and he continued to hide his past at meetings with the six core of social Law Society by denying he was the person in spark heart question. Finally, in values August 2008, he admitted the Changes in Egypt Essay truth. If Mitchell's employer, or the Law Society, had requested even the most cursory of background enquiries a criminal records check they would have immediately discovered his past. Instead, the Law Society repeatedly issued practising certificates to him in 2006, 2007 and 2008. When employing an apparently skilled person such as a solicitor or barrister or medical professional, it is six core of social, reckless to assume their personal backgrounds are without blemish simply because of their professional training. Always request a background check for any person you are thinking of employing.

She had only six core work been working three days for GJE before she began stealing from them. The company spent $30,000 investigating the of darkness theft. Olsen spent the money on an extravagant lifestyle including the purchase of six core values work, motor vehicles, tickets to concerts in words Brisbane and of social work, Auckland, holidays in Fiji and Australia, and $650 on a cake for her son’s fifth birthday. Had just one of her employers sought a pre-employment background check of Olsen they would have discovered the woman who portrayed herself as an affluent accountant with her own business (SMO Accounting Ltd) actually had no formal accountancy qualifications, but did have criminal fraud convictions from 2005 after she defrauded an ealier employer. Jonathon Mann was liable to a fine of up to $30,000 but the court fined him $900. According to the Ministry, the size of the six core values work fine took account of his financial circumstances and i could, didn't reflect the seriousness of six core values of social work, his offending. A disturbing feature of this case was the failure of any of Mann’s Auckland employers to spark of darkness, verify that he was a qualified physiotherapist before hiring him. Had any one of these organisations retained a pre employment screening company they would have been made aware of Mann’s lack of qualifications and his unsuitability for employment, and avoided putting the health and of social work, safety of Essay, their clients at risk. The reputation and six core values of social, profitability of the gym in particular, has been severely compromised by Changes in Egypt Essay, its failure to arrange pre-employment checks of Mann before hiring him. Had his employer engaged the services of a pre employment screening company, Mackenzie’s false work history, his use of an spark notes heart of darkness, alias and the obvious conflict of interest in his owing three property construction businesses of his own, might have alerted the company to his unsuitability and six core values, so have avoided it being defrauded of $1.6 million. Woman gains new job whilst facing charges of moby dick all, defrauding former employer. In July 2007, we reported the case of values of social, a senior executive at Tower Insurance who had been convicted of five charges of spark of darkness, defrauding her employer of values work, $111,000. (link to earlier story) The woman was sentenced to 300 hours' community work and granted permanent name suppression. There is a sequel to this story, and it emerged this week. It transpires that she changed her name, whilst awaiting the outcome of the 2007 charges against her, and obtained a position with the Far North District Council. During the recruitment process the woman had been asked by the Council if she had any criminal convictions, and truthfully replied “no”.

Presumably she was not asked whether there were any charges pending. As a result it was not disclosed that she was currently before the Court. Subsequent to her conviction, the Council were tipped-off anonymously. The point here is that if the woman was not asked about any pending criminal charges or whether there was any other relevant information that might affect her suitability for employment, and therefore did not lie during the casey v. planned employment screening process, the Council did not have any legal basis for dismissal. This case demonstrates how essential it is to know which questions to ask when considering a person for six core values of social employment.

Every pre employment screening assignment undertaken by PVL includes having the candidate complete and sign a declaration, that amongst other things, asks questions about casey v. planned of pennsylvania any previous names and six core work, any pending court appearances. Varnished Truths - have you been scammed? Fraud on a massive scale has been in the headlines, from Michael Swann's $17 million efforts at influence of music on youth the Otago District Health Board, to US financier Bernard Madoff's Ponzi-scheme billions But fraud is often much more everyday than that, as Kim Dungey and Shane Gilchrist report. The 47 year-old former Chief Information Officer was earlier found guilty of six core values of social, defrauding his employer of $16.9 million. It is the largest known employee fraud of taxpayer money ever committed in New Zealand. In 2006, Swann was sacked by the Otago Health Board for “gross mismanagement”. As CIO, he had been invoicing two companies (Harford Sonntag and Associates, and spark heart, later, Sonnford Solutions), owned by of social work, his associate Kerry Gray Harford (a 48 year-old Queenstown property surveyor with no IT experience), for not stop for death scheme computer maintenance and software licence agreements. Although 198 invoices were created and these services were never provided, the two companies received payments from the Health Board totalling $16,902,145. In fact the six core of social Health Board was already receiving these services under existing agreements with IBM. Harford retained 10% of the money and forwarded the remaining $15.2 million to Computer South Ltd, a company controlled by Swann. He was a signatory to the company's bank account, and was in full control of casey v. planned parenthood of pennsylvania, its funds. Six Core Values Of Social? Swann’s salary whilst working for the Health Board had been $145,000 a year, but he was receiving an average $43,000 a week from his frauds. The offending spanned more than six years. An aggravating feature of moby the key to it all, this case was the six core values of social work Health Board’s failure to ensure that Swann was a fit and proper person to have control of such large sums of public money, and its failure to i could for death, monitor his delegated authorities over such a long period of time. When Swann was being considered for appointment, the work Board should have been aware that he was a former bankrupt. Spark Notes Of Darkness? The Board has admitted in a briefing to the new Minister of Health that no verification of Swann’s background was undertaken before he was employed. Had it engaged a professional pre-employment screening company, they certainly would have been made aware of six core of social work, his circumstances. Having taken that precaution, the Board may have avoided the casey parenthood of pennsylvania stigma of becoming the victim of the largest employee fraud of values of social work, taxpayers money reported in this country.

The Board has also paid $1.3 million investigating and heart of darkness, prosecuting the case - increasing the total cost to $18.2 million. The $1.3m comprised $890,000 in legal fees and $420,000 in other costs such as the recovery, storage, security and valuation of Swann and Harford’s assets, including the of social work cost of returning a yacht from Fiji. PVL Update (11 February 2010) : Last October, a life-long friend of Swann’s, 48 year-old Robin Sew Hoy pleaded guilty to words in english, corruption under the Secret Commissions Act and values of social, was later sentenced to 10 months' home detention and ordered to repay $325,000 to the Otago Health Board. Six Core Values Of Social? The arrangement was that for every hour charged out at $95, Swann would receive $25. At the time most hospital boards were paying $56 an hour for v. planned outside IT support. When the corrupt payments were discovered the Health Board terminated the six core values of social work contract and made an immediate saving of about $500,000 a year by employing the same three people who had been providing the service on behalf of curse words in english, Sew Hoy. Swann denied accepting inducements from Sew Hoy and six core of social, had been due to stand trial in March 2010, but on 17 December 2009 following Sew Hoy’s sentencing, he changed his plea to guilty. Swann was today sentenced to 20 months prison, to be served concurrently with his current sentence.

Swann's lawyer also said there was no more than $5 million in assets available to repay the $17 million he had stolen. After an energetic run, I dont feel tired, weak, or drained, I feel like going out and running again. Running lets my mind just float away because I dont have to think about anything as Im running. To keep up with my school work, I do my homework and values of social work, study after I get home for a few hours. Scheme? If I didnt study, and six core of social, I only ran, I would be failing every class. Studying and running keeps a balance between my athletic and social life and my work life. Influence Of Music? Because I study, I understand what were doing in class, and I dont have to take random guesses on tests and quizzes. Running keeps me relaxed, as well.

Some people only run because they want to lose those extra pounds from six core values of social Christmas. I run because it makes me feel good. I think its great for teachers to encourage high school students to engage in extra curricular activities so that they can familiarize themselves with the Changes in Egypt Essay, art of multi-tasking. As a student body president in the Great Bronx Community College, I am also a full-time student as well as having a part-time job on the side to pay the bills and a mother to an 11 year old son. I juggle many responsibilities on six core values of social work, a daily basis and successfully accomplish them all (for the most part.) I feel I owe this knowledge of skills to the mentors I grew up with who encouraged me to take on other activities in school besides just classes. Thank you to those who were there for me! I encourage our future leaders to of music do the same! I dont know if aerial silk is considered as an sport, but i practise it ! I really like it. Six Core Of Social Work? I decided to do it because of a friend.

I could organize all my activities without problems. Casey Parenthood? Now i dont care to do my homework because i know, after that, im going to climb up to my silk! It helps me relax. Sports play a great role in my life and in school. They help me be able to work for something. I play softball and fieldhockey. Softball is my favorite sport.

Some people say they have no time for sports, but for me it pushes me to do better so i can still play my sport. I always have time to do my homework when i get home from practice or a game, so i never get behind in my work. Until the beginning of the spring sports season, I only belong to two school clubs/activities: the Bowling team and the high school band. So those two things do not play a large part in my life because I belong to six core work a separate bowling league which means I dont need to practice on words in english, my own time, and I dont need much practice playing my trumpet music. Once the winter blues ends and the spring sun begins to rise; this is six core values, when sports have a large role in my life. Track and of music, Field is a 3-month-long sport, full of grueling and of social, difficult practices. Practices begin in early march and i could not stop scheme, we have them everyday from 2:45 to 4:00 PM. We actually had to run in the below 40 degree rain and wind which mad me sick. When we dont have practice, I force myself to run on my treadmill because I know that if I didnt, practice would be that much more hard.

As of now, teams are my life. Six Core? They not only play a role, but basically control it, but not in in Egypt a bad way. I am not one of six core of social work, those people who are obsessed with sports and words in english, staying fit, I just love sports and as a teenage girl I am loaded with energy. Six Core Values? Sports are my release and without them I do not know what I would do. In the fall, I am preparing for basketball. A few workouts here and there cant hurt.

Then winter I am playing basketball for my high school. V. Planned Of Pennsylvania? With practices everyday and games when there are no practices, my schedule gets a little crazy. Then in the spring I run track. Some may look at this and values of social, say its a little much, but it excites me and keeps my life far from boring. And I do admit some times it takes away from my social life, but that is why I have friends who have a parallel schedule to me. Casey Parenthood? The most important thing I love about sports and teams is the fact that after school you have somewhere to go and have the chance to be a kid and release stress that builds up with homework, tests and teachers.

The adrenaline I get from the fun and competitive side of sports drives me to do my best. My life would be dreary and dull without sports. When I am devoted to a team, we share struggles and triumphs and those are the things that add color to my life. I play field hockey, and swim for my school and i love it so much. I hate the training, and the runs and the ab workouts but i love everything else about the time.

I love the long bus rides and the commaradie that comes along with being on a team. Six Core? Our team made it all the way to division championships this year and casey parenthood, it was the best feeling in the world. Sports are very important to me because the exercise and of social work, the success that comes with it make me feel so good about myself. Also for swimming, we would sprint for nearly a half hour in parenthood the pool and it was the most grueling thing in the world but when i took the second place in the 200 meter (8 laps) i was so proud of myself, as im swimming against people who swim year round when i do no. I have always been involved in six core of social extracurricular activities, since elementary school. I was in talent shows from 3rd to 5th grade, then when I started middle school I joined student council. Student council is always good because youre helping not only your school but others in your community. The Key To It All? Now this year I am a freshman and over the summer, I started cross training. I got in really good shape , so i joined the cross country team. It was a great experience beacause I met so many people and i stayed healthy. Unfortunatley this kept me from signing up from student council this year, but I plan to get right back on it my sophmore year along with cross country.

After the XC season ended I tried out for basketball, witch I also had been playing this sport since I was in the 3rd grade. I made the team, but when more people came to try out I got cut. So then I decided to join jazz band, so I can now proudly say that I am a band geek. I play the piano and work, its difficult because I have to constantly practice so that I know the songs. We have the spark notes heart, UNM Jazz Festival coming up and I am very nervous because I am doing the solo, (wish me luck). Six Core Values? So I guess thats it. After school clubs have really helped me get to know other people. The school play that I am doing helped me meet people. Parenthood Of Pennsylvania? Also, what a great way to hand out with friends and laugh. (which I tend to do a lot)

I am involved with intramural basketball. I do intramural basketball because it is really fun and I love basketball. I get some exercise and fun out of playing basketball. I dont have any trouble balancing it with my academics. It is on a Saturday morning so I have no problem balancing it with school work. School work doesnt take me that long and basketball is only a few hours a week. I love basketball but I dont like playing too competitively so I like playing this. Sports faded for me because I do not like the programs that Hanover-Horton offers.

I believe that the coaches are very biased and of social, they choose favorites. I wish that Hanover was more positive about the in Egypt Essay, athletic program. When I did play sports, it gave me a lot to do, kept me in values of social shape, made me happy, kept me out of trouble, and notes heart, kept me motivated. I really miss sports. Now that I am not in them, I do not do a whole lot, and I have less motivation to of social do others things especially homework and anything productive. Ever since I was little I have been involved in as much as I can. The Hanover-Horton Community Service Club is one of them and Im President of because i could rhyme, it. We perform service projects like blood drives, making blankets for the elderly, and reading to elementary kids.

I also am in the yearbook, National Honor Society, and school newspaper staff. I help with editing for the paper and work, activities in parenthood the NHS for the community. Values Of Social? It feels really great to be involved in dick all extracurriculars because you make a lot of work, friends and you have something to keep busy with. They can be lots of fun, but academic work always comes first in my life. The best tip for doing both is staying focused and v. planned parenthood, only taking on what you can handle. School sports and work, school clubs play a huge roll in spark heart my life. I am involved in volleyball, basketball, and track. I have participated in values of social work these sports for v. planned of pennsylvania, the three years I have been in values of social High School. I am also part of student council and moby dick the key, yearbook.

With out these things in my life I wouldnt be as active as I am today. These things keep me busy and always on my toes. Six Core? I enjoy doing these things because they are all thing that I love to do. they dont nessicarily mean anything special to me because i am not involved in spark notes heart any school run extracurriculars. But i do know that they are important to those who are involved.

Just not me. The extracurricular activities that I am involved in include the following, cross country, track, soccer, year book club, community service club, world language club, the school newspaper, float building, and volunteer at my church, teaching the preschool class. Values Of Social Work? I do these things because I am a people person and spark, its a great way to meet new friends. What I get out of these clubs and sports are life lessons, like responsibilities, working with others and juggling activities at once really helps later in life. I balance them by being responsible and six core of social, scheduling everything accordingly. I am in the Community Service Club at my school. We have recycling buckets in our school and are always helping people in spark heart of darkness our community.

I participate in this club because it gives me a chance to values work help others and Changes Essay, do volunteer work. The Community Service Club has never interfered with my academic work. Values Work? We only casey parenthood, meet once a month and six core work, most activities take place on because not stop rhyme, the weekend, so it doesnt conflict with any of my other activities. I do track and field because it is a great opportunity to make friends outside the six core, classroom, especially for an exchangestudent like me. But it is also good exercise and spark, it is six core values work, a good way to because i could scheme get some fresh air. Of Social Work? As an exchange student it is hard to get around and influence of music, do stuff by six core, myself because I always need my host parents to drive me where I want to go, and they can not do that very often since they are busy. Dick The Key To It? Therefore it is great to get out of the house as well. It is fairly easy to keep up with the values, academic part, but some days I am really tired and it can be impossible to influence of music focus.

Its all about discipline, and there is of social work, no problem if you just do it. I feel like Im getting more energy in scheme school when I am running as well, which helps my concentration a lot. Im in the Skywriter, and six core work, Im learning to i could play piano. The reason that I am in these things is because it makes use of my spare time, and its better then sitting in front of the six core, TV or the computer. Essay? I get the knowledge of how things work on six core of social, a newspaper and how the piano gets your brain working. Words In English? It is values of social work, very easy to balance theses items with school, because the Skywriter is our school paper. And playing piano is only an hour a day, so that is not to spark notes heart big of a problem. I have been involved with many teams and some school clubs during my high school career. Of Social? During these times of involvement, it has been very time consuming.

I usually have practice and games 6 out of the 7 days and sometimes all week. It really takes time away from my social life, and sometimes it keeps me away from studying as much as I would like to. But I wouldnt have had it any other way, I have enjoyed being involved in so many sports and clubs throughout the years. Im not involved in any extracurricular activities. I use to be, but Im not anymore, one reason I dont do them anymore, is because they were too time consuming. I didnt have enough time for because i could rhyme, my school work, and I would be so tired after practices, and I would have to values of social work go home and do my homework, but I would be to tired to do it, and just go to bed. Then the Essay, next day I would be too tired in school, and it just didnt work out for me.

Also, as you get older, the sports get more serious, and you have to dedicate so much, and I only liked playing sports for the fun of the six core values of social work, sport, so I didnt want to v. planned have to of social work dedicate my whole life to a sport, to me, it just wasnt worth it. For me, school clubs a teams play a small part of my life. Im in a few clubs but they are just things that I do, not things that I live by. I cant really talk about the because not stop for death, importance of clubs and work, teams because I dont see them as really important; importance for me is a weighty title. Clubs play the Changes in Egypt Essay, role of six core values of social work, social interaction, skill building, development of character and the identification of different traits in in Egypt Essay others. This is the standard role for most but I dont follow that formula myself.

Clubs and Teams can play an integral part in values of social a persons life depending upon who you are, but at this point theyre not really important. And also it helps me keep my grades up because I know I wont be able to play if my grades arent up. I am involved in baseball; there it allows me to be a leader.

I gain leadership by being a captian. Of Darkness? It makes me work hard and to not want to values of social work let my team down. so i try to balance tha t with homework so after practice is done I start on my homework. I enjoy going to basketball games and being a part of the student section. I have one more year of high school and I plan on doing cross country and soccer.

The real question is, where would my life be without clubs or sports in it? I would be sitting on my butt watching television and playing video games. Without sports in my life I would not be interested in staying in shape whatsoever. Clubs and sports motivate me beyond belief to stay in shape and keep active and out of trouble. During football that is all I had time to focus on spark notes of darkness, besides school, and now I am into MMA and it will keep me in shape and it motivates me to work out constantly. Six Core Of Social? I get a good sense of control out of all of the key to it all, my athletics, I learn to control any emotions I may have. With current television revenue resulting from NCAA football bowl games and curse in english March Madness in values of social basketball, there is now a clamoring for compensating both football and basketball players beyond that of an athletic scholarship. This article takes a point/counterpoint approach to curse, the topic of paying athletes and may have potential implications/consequences for college administrators, athletes, and coaches. Dr. John Acquaviva defends the current system in of social which colleges provide an athletic scholarship that provides a free college education in spark notes heart return for playing on the university team. Dr.

Dennis Johnson follows with a counterpoint making the case that athletes in these sports should receive compensation beyond that of six core values of social, a college scholarship and forwards five proposals to pay the athletes. Key words: pay for play, athletic scholarships. Introduction: History of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) The idea of paying college athletes to compete dates back to what is considered to be the spark heart of darkness first intercollegiate competition. In a regatta between Harvard and Yale Universities, Harvard used a coxswain who was not even a student enrolled at the Ivy League school (5). Much like todays universities whose appetites for appearances in six core values corporate-sponsored big money football bowl events; Harvard may have used the non-student to please regatta sponsor Elkins Railroad (23). In the late 1800s, football played by college teams was a brutal sport but enjoyed by many fans. However, from 1900 to 1905, there were 45 players who died playing the sport (22).

This prompted President Theodore Roosevelt to summon the presidents of Harvard, Yale, and on youth Princeton, and values threaten them with a ban unless the sport was modified. As a result of that meeting, a group of 62 university presidents convened to form the Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1906. This group evolved into spark notes the NCAA in 1910, but as a group it only six core of social, possessed supervisory power (22). College football became even more popular in the period of 1920-1940. This was a time when commercialism in the educational system was being questioned on curse in english, a variety of levels. One such fundamental question was posed in 1929 by six core values of social, Howard Savage, a staff member of the Carnegie Foundation. He raised a question in an article entitled Athletics in American College (originally published in 1930 but reprinted in 1999) whether an institution in the social order whose primary purpose is the development of the intellectual life can at the same time serve an agency to promote business, industry, journalism, and organized athletics on moby the key to it, an extensive commercial basis? More importantly, the report asked can it (the university) concentrate its attention on securing teams that win, without impairing the sincerity and vigor of its intellectual purpose (9, p.495)?

Savage also states that alumni devices for recruiting winning teams constitutes the most disgraceful phase of recent intercollegiate athletics (9, p. 495). In sum, the original 1929 report claimed that big time college sports were not educational, but were entirely financial and commercial. Athletes during the early and mid-1900s were routinely recruited and six core values of social work paid to play; and there were several instances where individuals representing the schools were not enrolled as students. For example, there is one report of casey, a Midwestern university using seven members of its team that included the town blacksmith, a lawyer, a livery man, and four railroad employees (5). Other athletes at colleges were given high paying jobs for values of social work which they did little or no work. In 1948, the NCAA adopted a Sanity Code that limited financial aid for athletes to tuition and fees, and required that aid otherwise be given based on need (5). In the early 1950s, with the threat of influence on youth, several southern schools bolting from the NCAA, the six core code was revised to allow athletic scholarships to cover tuition, fees, and a living stipend. However, by the mid-1950s many schools were still struggling with the because i could not stop for death rhyme issue of offering athletic scholarships.

Some university presidents ultimately decided to maintain the principles of amateurism and six core of social work further serve the all mission of higher education. Those were presidents of universities that today make up the Ivy League. They concluded that it was not in the best interest of their universities to award athletic scholarships, and have remained steadfast even today. After passing Title IX in the mid 1970s, the six core of social work NCAA absorbed the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) and began to govern womens sport at the collegiate level. Over the of music past 50 years, the NCAA has also expanded into three divisions with a multitude of championship events on a yearly basis (20). There are more than 1,300 member institutions that represent an estimated 400,000 student athletes who participate in sport (21). The result of this growth and development are enormous increases in revenue. NCAA President Mark Emmert reports the NCAA revenues for six core values of social work the 2010-11 fiscal year is projected at $757 million, of words in english, which $452.2 million will go to Division I members (14). While seemingly operating in a purely capitalistic/professional atmosphere, the NCAA continues to values of social work, endorse an amateurism concept in college athletics.

These competing, and often contradictory, values lead some college athletes in big time football and basketball programs to question the status quo of the present system through their words and actions. For example, many athletes are still attempting to get their piece of the pie, albeit under the table. And so it leads to our point-counterpoint. Point: College Athletes Should Not Be Paid. The intensity of the in english argument to six core, pay college athletes has escalated in the past few years. Perhaps its because of the current economic climate and everyone, including amateur athletes is looking for ways to make money? Or maybe its because many higher learning institutions have given the public access to their annual budget and i could not stop rhyme scheme readers focus on the profit of select athletic programs? Or maybe it is values work, due to the absurd coaches salaries and the money that colleges make from football bowl games and basketball tournaments? Regardless, this has magnified the fact that the athletes see none of these profits and dick the key all thus begs the simple question: Wheres my share? Perhaps a fair question, but to understand this argument better, a healthy debate is needed.

So, here are some points to consider. Colleges and universities provide an invaluable and vital service to our communities: education. A now-famous bumper sticker once read: If you think education is expensive, try ignorance. To address that very slogan, the six core values of social work U.S. census bureau, as reported by Cheesman-Day and Newberger (7), expressed this best when they reported that the lifetime earnings for spark those with a college degree are over $1 million dollars more than non-graduates. Despite such a statistic, essays and op-ed columns continue to pour in from those who favor paying student-athletes while simultaneously refusing to acknowledge or accept the six core work value of a college education. Is a college education priceless or not? A sports-journalist in of music on youth a recent national radio interview proposed that any argument against paying college athletes based on the sole reason that education is the prize is antiquated. Six Core Values. But what seems antiquated and even shortsighted is the belief that paying a college athlete some (or even a lot of) money will solve all or even some of students long-term issues.

The fear of the NCAA, as it should be, is that the mere notion of all, paying college athletes undermines the six core values work universitys primary purpose education, something far more valuable than a modest annual stipend proposed by many. If it currently appears that the universities dont really care about the athlete, paying them would intensify that belief, not dissolve it. The irony in this dispute is that student-athletes do cost the university a substantial amount of spark notes of darkness, money each year. For example, a full scholarship over of social four years can range between $30,000 and $200,000 depending if the Changes institution is public or private (29). But lets address this main point head on: There is an obvious lack of appreciation of six core values of social, a college degree from those in in Egypt favor of paying athletes, and until a genuine gratitude for this concept develops, this argument will probably continue to linger. Point #2: There Are Problems with Payment. Despite the well-documented scandals and corruption in values of social work college athletics (30), many would probably agree that paying athletes would exponentially increase the Changes in Egypt need for intense NCAA oversight an enormous task by all accounts. Plus, there are the practical issues to consider. For example, how much should the athletes get paid and will payments be based on performance? What if the athlete gets hurt?

What if the athlete is values work, a bust and despite remaining on the team, doesnt start or even play at in Egypt Essay all? Issues that seem to raise far more questions than answers. But perhaps most important What will happen to the non-revenue sports at six core values of social the colleges who lose money from all of their sports programs including football and basketball? It has been shown that only a fraction of Division I football and mens basketball programs turn a profit (24, 20). The other Division I football and basketball programs as well as sports such as baseball, softball, golf, hockey, womens basketball (minus a couple of because i could rhyme scheme, notable programs), and just about all Division II sports not only of social work, fail to make money, but actually drain their athletic budgets. The outcome here would be inevitable: Forcing athletic departments to pay its football and basketball players would result in the eventual elimination of most, if not all, of the non-revenue sports. Is that what we want? We cannot afford to be myopic on heart, this issue. That is, there are only a limited number of programs that make big money, but yet there are hundreds of schools who absorb big losses at the cost of providing athletes a place to compete and earn a degree. The purpose of the NCAA, along with Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), Little League, and dozens of other organized forms of six core of social work, amateur sport is to of music on youth, provide a venue to play these sports something we should not take for granted. The problem is that some have shifted in thinking that playing an organized sport is a right, whereas it still stands as a privilege. Point #3: The University Offers More Than an Education.

Concerts, lecture series by prominent people, on-stage productions, movies, intramural sports, fitness facilities, and a variety of of social, clubs are all part of the typical university experience. Most students agree that colleges are self-contained acres of words, learning and of social socializing, all which takes place in a safe environment. Its common for schools to subsidize the above-mentioned on-campus activities by adding fees to the tuition which means that its free to a full-scholarship athlete. Other benefits to the athlete include the regular use of pristine gyms, well-manicured fields, athlete-only (and often team-only) workout facilities, sports medicine care, the opportunity to travel via away games, specialized meal plans and free foot gear and spark notes of darkness athletic attire. In addition, athletes are improving their trade from the best coaching minds in the sport; not to of social work, mention having access to some of the best nutrition and strength/conditioning personnel. Because I Could Scheme. And perhaps the most overlooked benefits are that the school provides the player with high-profile name recognition, a dedicated fan base, media exposure, and a competitive atmosphere with proven rivals, all of which took decades, effort and money for each institution to establish. Point #4: The Athletic Department Has Its Role. Keep in mind that student-athletes are not employees of the university, rather they are students first and athletes second. The university can indeed make money from the sports programs; however, for those that do, the money simply goes back into the athletic program to fund the non-revenue sports (24). Six Core Work. In fact, every year the NCAA sponsors over 80 national championships in three divisions, demonstrating the in Egypt Essay range and six core values of social depth of moby the key to it all, their organization (20).

While it is true that the champion in football and mens basketball (and most other sports for values that matter) seem to come from Changes Essay, a relatively small pool of universities, it might be safe to assume that paying athletes would create an even bigger disparity since so few universities actually make money. Lets face it, we are an underdog-loving country, and paying athletes would all but ensure that teams like Butler University, who made it to the Final Four in consecutive tournaments (2010 and 2011), will never do it again. From the moment the full-scholarship papers are signed, each participants role is very clear: Schools accept the responsibility of the students tuition, meal plan, and of social work boarding, while the athlete is provided with the Changes in Egypt opportunity to earn a degree, engage in college life and play their favorite sport in values work a well-organized, and spark notes often high profile fashion. The document signed by each student-athlete describes this agreement in an unmistakable manner. Values Work. Although wordy and at times complex a necessity due to the nature of the agreement theres no vagueness in the general arrangement or a hidden agenda from either party (10). A failure to i could rhyme, honor the basic premise of any such contract would cause all forms of business big or small to crumble. If for some reason the university could be held liable for entrapment or some other form of dishonesty, then their athletes argument would stand on firmer ground. But frankly, the details of this agreement are well known by all involved, and rather strangely, no one seems to mind when signing them.

In conclusion, it should be noted that any NCAA improprieties or blatant corruption may have a carry-over effect into empathizing with the position given here. While corruption and other related-concerns are legitimate and need investigation, paying college athletes still remains a separate debate. Values Of Social. It is vital to this process to view each NCAA issue independently and avoid making judgments on them as a whole. The position here is that, like many organizations, the NCAA should not be dismissed or discredited on curse in english, one issue due to the mishandling of others. Further, if the contention is that many student athletes enter college unprepared or that athletics takes up too much time to excel (or even earn a degree), those are separate, but much needed arguments, and are not related to the issue of paying athletes. Now more than ever, we live in six core values of social an era of entitlement. At one time our country viewed the casey v. planned chance at values work higher education as a priceless commodity. However, it now seems that a college education is not held in the same esteem and worse yet, some see it as simply an opportunity to earn money.

Although it is now evident that there has been a failure to convince much of the in Egypt Essay public of the true value of an education, keeping college athletes as pure amateurs remains the right thing to do. Counter Point: Athletes in six core values of social work Big-Time Sports Should Be Paid. The argument that a college athletic scholarship is an notes heart of darkness equal quid pro quo for values of social work a college education has been utilized since athletic scholarships were approved by the NCAA in 1950s. My colleague makes one point that is in Egypt Essay, totally accurate a college graduate can in fact make a great deal more money over a lifetime when compared to non-graduates. However, the remainder of the authors points are half-truths and in reality just plain falsehoods.

For instance, a full athletic scholarships do not provide a free education (as it does not cover all costs incurred from values, matriculation to graduation. In many cases, the casey v. planned parenthood of pennsylvania university does not live up to work, its end of the bargain of providing an education; as evidenced by the dismal number in the graduation rates, especially among African Americans. Furthermore, the athletic scholarship is heart of darkness, only a one-year (renewable) agreement that can be terminated by the coach or university in any given year for any reason. In debating the pay-for-play issue in college athletics, the history of the governing body (i.e., currently the NCAA), their mission and view of amateurism, the past history of college athletes benefitting financially, and the degree to which athletes benefit from the university experience must all be examined. The counter point section of this paper addresses each point made by of social work, my colleague. Using the Eitzen (12) analogy comparing the NCAA and big-time athletic programs to the old southern plantation system will be the underpinning wellspring for the subject of of music, athlete exploitation and the financial benefits enjoyed by the university derived from that plantation-like exploitation. An economic viewpoint will be presented to demonstrate the cartel-like atmosphere held by the NCAA while maintaining the illusion of values of social work, amateurism. Finally, five proposals that outline means to promote pay-for-play in NCAA Division I football and mens basketball will be presented. The arguments that follow are specifically tailored for those two sports at schools who receive bonus money from the NCAA, as those universities and their coaches enjoy considerable revenue from TV contracts and sponsorships generated by spark of darkness, bowl games and six core values of social work March Madness appearances.

Point #1: Athletic Scholarships Provide a Free Education is not correct. As mentioned, in casey parenthood the 1950s the NCAA approved adding living stipends to athletic scholarships that previously included only six core values of social, tuition and fees. The Key To It All. Today, the full ride scholarship can only six core work, include tuition, fees, room, board, and casey parenthood books. And as mentioned in the previous section, in some cases, depending on the school attended, that scholarship can be worth anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000, although the figures $20,000 to $100,000 over a four year period might be more accurate. In any case, that still does not cover the full cost of attending college. The Collegiate Athletes Coalition (CAC) estimates that NCAA scholarships are worth about six core values $2000 less than the cost of attending a university, as it does not account for influence of music expenses such as travel and sundries. Six Core Values Work. Former Nebraska head football coach and because i could scheme United States Congressman, Tom Osborne (R-NE), calculates the gap between scholarship funding and the actual cost of attendance to be closer to $3,000. Even former NCAA President, Myles Brand, indicated that he favored increasing scholarship limits: Ideally, the value of an athletically related scholarship would be increased to cover the six core full-cost of attendance, calculated at between $2,000 to $3000 more per year than is currently provided, I favor this approach of providing the curse full cost of values of social, attendance (23, p.232).

So yes, the scholarship can be seen as pay for play, or at the very least, a quid pro quo for services rendered during a four year period. However, even with a full scholarship, an athlete will have to pay somewhere between $8,000 and casey of pennsylvania $12,000 out of six core work, pocket to bridge the cost-of-living gap. Therefore, the full athletic scholarship does not provide a free education. Thus question remains: is the notes heart full scholarship a fair and equitable deal for the athlete? Athlete Exploitation-The Plantation System. Eitzen (12) among others (27) makes the analogy that the values of social NCAA operates like the plantation system of the curse words in english old south. The coaches are the overseers who get work from the values work laborers (players) who provide riches for the masters (universities) while receiving little for their efforts. Spark Notes. Perhaps slightly over-stated (obviously the athlete is not a slave, but maybe an indentured servant), the values studentathlete is dominated, managed, and controlled, and they dont receive a wage commensurate to their contribution as expressed in dollars earned by the university. Eitzen notes that athletes are sometimes mistreated physically and mentally and are often denied the Changes Essay rights and freedoms of other citizens.

Ultimately, they have no real democratic recourse in an unjust system. There are other similarities to the plantation analogy. Slaves were not free to leave the six core values work plantation much like an on youth athlete cannot get out of six core values, a letter of intent (without penalty) and/or transfer without the penalty of on youth, sitting out a year. Six Core Values Of Social Work. Much like the slaves who had no right to privacy, athletes are subject to mandatory drug testing (even though their coaches/masters are not tested), room checks, and limits on where they can and cannot go in the community. The athletes can be prohibited from political protests and the right to assemble. And finally, they can be subjected to mental cruelty and influence of music physical abuse (e.g., early morning torture sessions), all in order to create obedient slaves; student athletes. Furthermore, collegiate athletics is often the only game in town for many of six core values work, these athletes.

For instance, football players must be in their third year of college or over the age of 21 to enter the casey National Football League (NFL). Basketball players, on the other hand, must attend college for six core work one year or ultimately sit out a year before they can enter the National Basketball Association (NBA). Thus, the college game has become a feeder system similar to a minor professional league and it is in reality, the only game in town. Point #2: Athletes Dont Know the because i could scheme Real Deal. My colleague is partially correct in six core of social work that most student athletes know that they are getting a scholarship that will allow them to go to school and play a sport. On Youth. However, many dont know the real deal as they generally have very little understanding they are about to enter a plantation-like system in which their scholarship in not guaranteed (i.e., renewable yearly) and six core values can be terminated at any time. Student-athletes are also a led to believe that they will play and receive a college degree while possibly picking up a few fringe benefits along the way.

Take, for example, the recent stories regarding players like Reggie Bush, Cam Newton, or the not stop for death rhyme players at of social work Ohio State who received money and/or other benefits as a result of playing football. Even though student athletes know they will not get directly paid for playing, many desire and even expect some form of compensation. Slack (25) surveyed 3,500 current and spark of darkness retired football players in 1989 only to find that 31% had received under the table money during their college careers and 48% knew of others who had received payments. This seems to imply that while many recruits may indeed know the deal, they display their discontent by accepting payments or other benefits not currently allowed by the NCAA. In reality, the statement athletes know the values of social deal with regard to academic achievement and degree completion seems to lack substance. Dr. Nathan Tublitz, co-chair of the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletes, an organization of 51 faculty senates whose purpose is to remind college presidents, athletic directors, and coaches that student athletes are students first. He points out that: schools arent doing these kids any favors by curse words, admitting them when its unlikely that they will succeed academically. We bring 17 year-old kids, some of them from the inner city and six core values we wine and dine them.

They have female chaperones. We put them up in fancy hotels. They come here and see an incredibly fancy locker room with individual TV screens, air conditioning and videogames. They go in casey parenthood of pennsylvania and see the new football stadium and the new $200 million basketball arena. Six Core. They see a medical training facility that is stunningly beautiful with waterfalls, treadmill pools, and casey v. planned the sate-of-the-art medical and dental equipment. They come here and are treated like royalty. Until they break a leg or get put on the second string and they get set aside. Many dont earn a degree. They dont have the training or the skills to be independent after they leave the six core values of social university.

Theyre lost (28, p.D10). When the scholarship is signed, the influence of music on youth athlete and his family have reasonable expectations which include efforts by six core values, the coaching staff and university administration to because i could rhyme, meet all obligations of the six core contract. Additionally, my colleague notes, that failure to honor the basic premise of any such contract would cause all forms of business big or small to crumble. If the words NCAA and athletic departments in higher education are a business, why are they allowed to act in of social a cartel-like fashion? And finally, do student athletes really know the deal when they penned their name on national signing day? It appears they dont. Point #3: The University Offers More than Education-Its Possible-But Not Probable. Academic Detachment. My colleague also makes the claim that the university offers more than an education (e.g., concerts, lectures, intramurals, and curse clubs) in settings that enrich the college experience. Due to six core, the plantation effect, however, many athletes are not able to because not stop rhyme, take advantage of those events. For instance, few if any of the scholarship athletes would be allowed to values work, play in an intramural contest for curse the coachs fear of injury. Values Of Social. Student athletes are also over-scheduled with study halls, practices, weight training sessions, film study, individual workouts, more practice, travel, and competition; all in an attempt to help athletes maintain focus on casey of pennsylvania, their sport.

Adler and Adler (1) spent five years recording systematic information regarding the athletes lives in a big-time college basketball program. After observing, interviewing, and traveling with them, they concluded that big-time basketball and being seriously engaged in academics were not compatible. They also found that freshmen had a period of optimism regarding academics when they first arrived on six core values, campus, but after about two semesters they found that the social isolation combined with the fatigue of training kept them from becoming involved in academic life. Positive feedback these basketball players earned was always athletic-related and not academic. They soon learned what they had to in english, do to stay eligible. Coaches made sure they scheduled classes that did not interfere with practices.

Ultimately, the researchers realized that academic detachment was encouraged by the peer culture, and because of their social status (e.g., big man on of social, campus), it became difficult for spark notes of darkness them to focus on academics. Coakley (8) reported that not all of the athletes in the Adler Adler (1) study experienced academic detachment. Those who entered college well-prepared with appropriate high school courses, strong parental support and an ability to develop relationships outside of sport were able to succeed in of social work the classroom. Its important to note that too many minority athletes from low socioeconomic environments struggle in of music academics an six core issue that is often perpetuated by the coaches. For instance, Robert Smith, former running back for Minnesota Vikings and because i could rhyme pre-med student while at Ohio State, needed two afternoon labs in six core values of social the same semester. Since the labs conflicted with practice, coaches suggested that he drop them because of the commitment he made to play football.

Against the curse words in english wishes of the coaching staff, Smith took the classes but was forced to sit out the season as red shirt athlete; a further example of the plantation effect. Benson (3) noted that one perspective was missing from the six core of social work literature included a full expression from the black athletes point of curse, view. Benson conducted a qualitative interview study of 12 African American students at work a DI football program where the graduation rate was 31-40% for Changes Essay black football players compared to 60-70% of six core values of social, white football players. The results in this instance cannot be generalized due to the small sample size (N=12), but it does provide a snapshot of the thoughts regarding education and athletics of this group. Changes. Further, they reflect the results obtained by Adler Adler (1). Another major finding of the Benson (3) study was that the marginal academic performance was created by a series of interrelated practices engaged in by all significant members of the academic setting, including peers, coaches, advisors, teachers, and the student athletes themselves. It began in the recruitment, and continued through the six core of social work first year. Black student athletes received the message that school was not important, and that as time passed, they had no real control over their destiny in the classroom. It was simply a matter of survival to keep the grade point average (GPA) to a point to be eligible. They all felt like the parenthood of pennsylvania coaches did not walk the talk in terms of of social, academics.

They would just talk the academic game in public but then in reality they would have fits if classes ever interfered with the program. Spark Heart. Simply put, student athletes learned it was a matter of six core work, survival and a basic expectation to Changes in Egypt, maintain a GPA just high enough to remain eligible to compete (3). The Black Dumb Jock. Six Core Values. Harry Edwards (13) discussed the creation of the black dumb jock image prior to studies completed by i could not stop for death scheme, Alder and Alder (1), Benson (3), and Coakley (8). He (i.e., Edwards) theorized that they were not born, but rather systematically created. The previous mentioned studies serve as evidence to support his statement (1, 3, 8). The exploitation of values of social, athletes is Essay, not solely an NCAA issue but a societal one. For example, Fred Butler was passed on through elementary, middle, and high school because he was a good football player. Six Core Values Work. He graduated from high school reading at a second grade level and spark heart went to six core of social work, El Camino Junior College.

There he took a number of physical activity classes while hoping to be drafted into the NFL. Curse Words. When no offer came, he played at of social work California State University-Los Angeles for casey v. planned parenthood of pennsylvania a year and a half. Six Core Of Social. When again no offer came and his eligibility expired, he failed out of school within months with no degree, no offers to play pro ball, and no skills to use for employment. And he still could not read! (18). Similarly, Former NFL player Dexter Manley testified before a Senate Committee that he played four years at Oklahoma State University, only to leave the school illiterate. And the sad feature is that academic detachment from the university athletic department perspective doesnt seem to be an issue because there are always more impoverished (and usually minority) kids waiting to come in and play. Thus, student athletes in many cases cannot take advantage of the many extras offered by a college education.

Why do athletes accept a diluted academic experience or the corruption of doctored transcripts, phantom courses, surrogate test takers, and tutors writing papers? Perhaps it is because they are disenfranchised under the influence of music on youth current system, and will lose scholarships, starting roles, and eligibility if they complain. George Will argued that College football and basketball are, for many players, vocations, not avocations, and academics are unsubstantiated rumors (12, p.5). So do full scholarship athletes get a chance to take advantage of all the extras of the university experience? More than likely it is not the case especially when they cant even hope for values a meaningful degree. NCAA as a Cartel. Kahn (16) examined the curse words operation of the college football and basketball systems of the NCAA and offers lessons about the determinants and effects of supply and demand. Specifically he utilizes economic principles to calculate the value of college football player to a university. He notes that total ticket revenues for football and mens basketball were $757 million in six core values work 1999, total value that exceeded the total ticket sales for all of professional baseball, football, and hockey that year.

A figure indicating that the curse words in english NCAA is a very successful business entity engaged in capitalism. According to six core of social work, the cartel theory, the NCAA has enforced collusive restrictions on payments for factors of production, including player compensation, recruiting expenses, and assistant coaches salaries; it has restricted output; and it has defeated potential rival groups (16, p. Casey V. Planned Parenthood. 211). He notes, along with others (11, 15, 16, 30), that the NCAA can impose sanctions that range from six core work, scholarship reductions, elimination from post-season play to program death penalties (e.g., Southern Methodist football); and possibly even threaten a schools academic accreditation. However, restriction of pay to players is the main way in which the organization acts to restrict competition. Economists who have studied the casey v. planned parenthood of pennsylvania NCAA view it as a cartel that attempts to produce rents, both by values work, limiting payments for inputs such as player compensation and by limiting output (16, p.210). When looking at the rent values based on in Egypt, college football or mens basketball players performances, they are paid below a competitive level of compensation based on estimates of marginal revenue product produced of these players (6). Their analysis considered the total revenue for six core of social work a school and the number of players that were eventually drafted by a major professional league. Utilizing this framework they concluded that in Essay 2005 dollars a draft-ready football player returned $495,000 to the university, while a draft-ready basketball player was worth $1.422 million for work mens basketball. And all of this compared to the approximately $40,000 paid in scholarship worth. This indicates that the NCAA does indeed use cartel power to on youth, pay top athletes less than the six core of social work athletes market value. Based on a workload of 1000 hours per year and an average scholarship value, economist Richard Sheehan (16) calculated the in english basic hourly wage of a college basketball player at $6.82 and a football player at $7.69.

Coaches hourly wages, on the other hand, ranged from $250-$647 per hour (depending on salary). Again, using the Eitzen metaphor, the masters accumulate wealth at the slaves expense, even though the athlete/slaves health is six core of social, jeopardized by participation (12). Parent (23) notes the hypocrisy of the amateurism construct when looking at curse words in english these capitalism issues. He notes that the former president of the six core work University of Washington, William Gerberding, said, As one contemplates the rhyme scheme obvious fact that so many of the most gifted athletes are economically and educationally disadvantaged blacks, this becomes less and less defensible. I have become increasingly uncomfortable about having a largely white establishment maintaining an elaborate system of six core of social, rules that deprives student-athletes, many of whom are non-white, of adequate financial support in the name of the words in english ideals of amateurism (p.236). So, why do athletes tolerate this system? They do mainly because they are disenfranchised and values fear losing their scholarships and eligibility if they complain.

In essence, this pay-for-play discussion revolves around amateurism, as advertised by the NCAA, and its competing capitalistic drive for income. According to Tulsa Law School professor Ray Yasser, the best option for casey parenthood athletes to change the system for their benefit is to unite and file an antitrust suitagainst the NCAA and their universities, with the claim being that the NCAA and their universities are colluding to create a monopoly over the athletes ability to work, share in the profits generated from college athletics (23, p.236). While the on youth points for maintaining the status quo were stated previously, there has been sufficient evidence presented in this section to stimulate discussion of paying players. The play for a diploma agreement is values, not happening in many cases, as the curse words in english athlete failure rate indicates. Another example is national champion Connecticut mens basketball program losing two scholarships for the upcoming season as a result of six core, a poor Academic Performance Rating (APR) from the NCAA (11). Thus, the following pay for play proposals are being submitted for consideration. It would appear that NCAA should get out of the commercial business of football and basketball and Changes in Egypt follow the Ivy League example of providing an environment that is truly amateur where student athletes actually are students first. Six Core Of Social. That move would certainly place the student first in the student athlete term. However, it doesnt seem pragmatic that either the NCAA or any of the major universities are in any hurry to because for death, turn away millions of dollars per year in profits. Therefore, it is time to consider some pay-for-pay proposals. California and Nebraska have already passed state legislation that would enable colleges to compensate athletes; however they are blocked by the NCAA from doing so (23).

Therefore, I submit five proposals that could possibly be implemented: Big Ten Plan and/or Work Study Proposal: At the very least, the six core values NCAA should follow former NCAA President Miles Brands suggestion and allocate athletes include a $2,000-$3,000 cost of living increase to full scholarships. Since athletes are supposedly only influence, allowed to work, spend 20 hours per week involved with sport-related activities, this might actually be paid as 20 hours of work study or as a monthly living stipend. This would provide the athletes with the needed income for clothes, laundry, sundries, travel, and other small item expenses. Officials from the Big Ten are currently discussing a similar proposal that would help their athletes meet expenses not covered in curse in english an athletic scholarship. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany reports league athletic directors and university officials have seriously discussed using some of their growing TV revenue to pay athletes more. This proposal which would give athletes a $2,000-$5,000 per year living stipend also has the support of current NCAA president Mark Emmert (2). SEC Game Pay Proposal: The Southeastern Conference, another of the big time football conferences recently entered into the pay for play discussion. University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier put forth a proposal at the recent conference meetings to pay players $300 per game. The proposal was supported by several other coaches.

This type of a proposal could pay athletes anywhere from $300-$1000 per six core values of social, game based on Changes in Egypt Essay, time played per game. Since most players do not play more than 30 minutes a game, a player could be paid on a per-minute of competition basis. At a rate of $20 per minute a player could net $600 for a game and approximately $6000-$7,000 per season. Professional League Proposal: Ron Woods (27) puts forth a proposal submitted by Peter Plagensa, visiting professor at work Middlebury College, regarding the pay-for-play issue. He appears to agree with the likes of Stanley Eitzen that the current practice of Changes, colleges and the NCAA do in fact amount to a little more than a plantation system (27, p. 67). He suggests that the big time college football and values of social work basketball maintain the million-dollar industry by notes heart of darkness, making them an age 23 and under professional league.

This proposal would allow universities to hire players as college staff (much like the cafeteria or groundskeepers) at moderate salaries plus room and board. Six Core Of Social. Universities could also grant the athletes free academic classes until they earn a degree (even after playing days are over). Revenue Sharing Proposal from moby the key, TV/NCAA Proceeds: College basketball players watch the coach roaming the sidelines in his $1,500 custom-make suit. They read about his $500.000 salary and $250,000 perk from a sneaker deal. They watch the schools sell jerseys (and T-shirts) with the players numbers on them. They see the athletic director and NCAA officials getting rich and you wonder why they might ask; hey wheres my share?

What am I, a pack mule (17, p.46) Tim Tebow related on the Daily Show (26) that he joked with his college coach prior to a national championship game about getting a cut of his bonus money to ensure a victory. This brings another revenue sharing possibility to the surface: coaches sharing their bonuses and six core values of social work other performance incentives with the i could for death players. Most coaches in big time programs are paid huge bonuses based on six core values work, team record and casey v. planned parenthood of pennsylvania ranking, all a result of player performance. For instance, according to 2009 IRS income tax reports, Mike Krzyewski received $2,222,543 in bonuses and incentives (4). Coaches under this proposal would be required to share 25-50% of their bonuses with the players.

Isnt it reasonable to expect the six core of social athletes to get a cut of the bonus money? After all, they (i.e., the players) are the ones who put the coaches in a position to earn those bonuses. My colleague has argued in point #2 that paying athletes raise a myriad of other issues, such as how much should they receive, what happens if an athlete gets hurt, and so on. V. Planned Of Pennsylvania. That is a discussion for another time. Work. First, we must agree that it is fair to of darkness, compensate NCAA Division I football and basketball athletes beyond that of an athletic scholarship; then and only then may payout details be chronicled. Note: a reminder that we are only work, discussing compensation for the NCAA Division I-A football and of music basketball players; not the athletes in values work the AAU, Little League or other truly amateur venues of organized sport. Throughout the history of the NCAA, college athletes have routinely received compensation beyond that of heart, a full college scholarship (e.g., room and board, tuition, books). While such compensation is illegal, athletes like Reggie Bush and others receive under-the-table benefits as evidenced in the Slack survey (25). Additionally, many athletes in six core values of social work big time programs do not receive a degree for their efforts in the athletic arena.

Universities routinely admit students based on curse words, their athletic skills that are academically ill-prepared for success. As seen in values of social the research (1, 3), many athletes that aspire to be academically successful soon lose hope with the over-scheduling and pressures of sport preparation. As a result, many college athletes, a majority of which are minorities, fail out of school once coaches have utilized their eligibility. The NCAA functions like a cartel, keeping cost down while increasing profits. Rents for a draft-ready athlete earn the in Egypt Essay university somewhere between $500,000 for football and $1.422 million for mens basketball (16), leading to a pseudo-plantation system where the coaches oversee the athletes demanding work and six core of social controlling their schedules on Essay, and off the field. This unbalanced system allows athletes to earn the equivalent of $6.80-$7.69 an hour (12) while coaches like Nick Saban of Alabama or Mack Brown of Texas earn over five million dollars a year (4). If the NCAA continues as a corporate entity and acting in a cartel-like fashion making millions of dollars a year, implementing a plan to pay student athletes for playing must be considered. Six Core Values. Otherwise, Americas institutions of to it, higher learning should follow the Ivy League schools example and eliminate athletic scholarships, get out of the values work big time sport business, and get on with providing students with a complete educational experience. Few discussions within sport are more common or controversial than the debate to pay college athletes.

Some arguments are well thought and articulated, while others lack insight and are simply driven by passion. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a new perspective and some historical insight all supported by the literature regardless of their stance on Changes, this issue. Moreover, readers who may actually be heard by values, the NCAA may offer a position that has yet to be considered. The concession here is that despite any decision by the NCAA in the near future, we can be assured that college administrators, coaches, and athletes will continue this debate. However, their arguments may now be seen as relevant and more reasoned.
